Wood Craft and How It All Started
Wood craft is an extremely exciting activity that you can undertake in the comfort of your home. This is also a hobby that you can involve the whole family with each member of the family having a particular task to do in the wood crafting process. Examples of wood craft that you can build at home include miniature doll houses, miniature wishing well and also doll size furniture.
Wood craft can be described as the creative process of using wood to build, make or carve an object or model. There are some really gifted artisans who use wood to make sculptures of real life people such as presidents and sports heroes, characters in novels and movies among others.
Since time immemorial, wood was one of the main raw materials used in the making of crafts. For instance, research carried out on the Neanderthals exhibit that early man used wood among other materials such as stone and mud in the creation of basic items such as tools and weapons. In fact the stone materials such as pebbles and flakes were used on wood to make different crafts. The researchers in this field believe that civilization was able to develop as a result of the increase in the knowledge of how to work with these materials.
Wooden artifacts have been found in different parts of the world. The distribution of these artifacts indicate that either as man migrated from one point to another looking for the ideal conditions in order to survive, there was interaction with other societies and thus the spread of wood craft. There is also some significant evidence that points to the independent growth of wood carving in many civilizations.
For instance, evidence of wood sticks has been collected in the archaeological sites that are found in areas such as the Kalambo Falls, Lehringen and Clacton-on-Sea. probably the first ever wood spears were found at an ancient site in Germany indicating that by then man had began to use products from wood craft as hunting gear. This was probably the time when ancient communities survived as hunters and gatherers.
We cannot begin to discuss the roots of wood craft without looking at two ancient civilizations that were primarily responsible for the introduction of wood working to the world as we know it. One of these civilizations was the Egyptian civilization. The art of using wood to create utilitarian items used by the Egyptians is depicted in various ancient Egyptian drawings as well as holy manuscripts.
In addition to this formidable fact, there have been numerous citing of wooden stools, chairs, tables and spoons that were preserved in the Egyptian tombs. This is collaborated with the belief that the Egyptians buried their dead along with the deceased’s household items including slaves. They somehow believed that the deceased would be able to use these items in their after lives.
It is also comes as no surprise to many historians and archaeologists that the inner coffins of the Egyptian people were made out of wood. The Egyptians first started out using copper for wood working. It was not until later that the Egyptians learned to use bronze in wood craft. There is also overwhelming proof that the tools used in the wood working process include axes, pull saws, adzes and chisels.
The Egyptians were also very significant in the origin and development of the use of varnishes on the various wood crafts that were created. They are the ones that are credited with the discovery of veneering or the use for varnishes that are put as final touches on the wood carvings. This significant process would enable the product to have a shine or a slight gloss.
Another important development in wood making in ancient Egypt was the rapid deforestation of the Nile Valley. For this reason the Egyptian people would begin the importation of wood as there was hardly enough wood for wood making and carving. Most of the wood imports included cedar, box wood and oak. As this was going on, there was also the utilization of the different native trees such as the sycamore tree as well as the diverse acacias that were available in the immediate surroundings of the Egyptians.
The other significant civilization that is almost synonymous with the growth and spread of wood working is the Chinese civilization. The main character in this chapter in wood working in this part of the world is or was Lu Ban and his wife Lady Yun. The expansion of wood craft is credited to the innovation of transportation and trade mechanisms all throughout the world. China was now open to the whole world especially through the seas and explorers would bring in their own ideas about wood carvings and other useful techniques.
If you are just a beginner in wood craft learning the basics will propel you a long way from making basic decorative crafts to designing and creating elaborate wood carvings. Within no time you will be undertaking more complex projects that involve turning wood into something creative and useful.
