Essential Information on Handicrafts
Handicrafts are devices or works of art that are made completely by hand or by the use of relatively simple tools. Such goods are usually made in the traditional way of manufacturing goods. Therefore, the knowledge of the art of craft is usually passed down from one generation to another. The items made using these traditional methods of manufacturing are usually produced in smaller quantities and they often represent the culture or religious beliefs of the community that makes them. The goods are also handmade from natural materials that are found in the environment of the particular economy.
The making of handicrafts is essentially not a hobby as many would like to think. It forms part of the daily routine of a certain category of people such as the women folk or the young men. This makes it their responsibility to make such goods in order for them to be used by the rest of the community. In this way the traditional sector of creating goods by hand was a form of giving people responsibility and meaningful employment. In today’s modern world, the creation of handicrafts has been downplayed a lot mainly because of the introduction of new technology. The technology hardly requires human intervention and so the production process is speedy and there is mass production of goods. However, there are still some communities that practice the traditional production process but this is mainly on a very small scale.
For instance, there are some countries that have the making of handicrafts as part of the education curriculum. Such countries include Finland and Sweden, where students are taught how to use their hands to produce goods using natural materials like metal and wood. The skills taught in such subjects include problem solving skills on a routine basis and also increasing the ability of a student to manage the tools and materials around him with his hands effectively. This education provided to the students can also help them in developing the cottage industry which will go a long way in propelling the economy of the country forward.
One of the biggest exporters of hand made goods or handicrafts in the world is India. The history of crafts making in the area commonly referred to as India and Pakistan dates back to about 5000 years ago. Historians believe that this craft making industry originally revolved around the deities that were being worshiped at the time, and to serve the common needs of the people in that society.
The inhabitants of this region also had a keen eye for foreign as well as domestic trade. They would thus trade their crafts for items they could not produce themselves such as furs and agricultural products. The Indian crafts are very important in that they symbolize the assimilation of Indian groups with other societies such as the Greek.
Currently, the industry of making handicrafts is of major significance to a country, society and even to whole civilizations. There is a lot of information that we can get form this craft industry which points to the significant religious and cultural beliefs of a certain group of community such as the Indians. In this way we are better placed at understanding such a community’s way of life centuries after the crafts were created.
They also show case the different talents and abilities of the people that make the crafts. In the olden times, only the talented or the gifted were given the responsibility of making such crafts. These people were often praised throughout the region for their craft making skills. For this reason, they were bestowed upon great honor and prestige.
They would be brought into the presence of the kings and emperors because of their immense knowledge and skills of the crafts. They were often thought to be favored by the gods; some were even thought to be the gods in some minor instances due to their ability to create magnificent items using their hands.
Another key significance of handicrafts is that they celebrate and promote our different cultures. They help us identify and appreciate the uniqueness of the different cultural systems in the world and by this way helps us to fully comprehend some of the complex intricacies involved. Some of the items made were used in the worshipping of deities and of kings. This is important in that we are able to safeguard our communities’ religious beliefs.
We also get to appreciate the natural resources that are around us and that our forefathers used in order to come up with creative and useful items. Once we do this then we know it is wrong to misuse our environment. People can also learn how to make proper use of the environment just like our forefathers did. World issues such as environmental degradation can be solved if only by a small part if we use the natural environment wisely.
Another clear importance of the industry, despite how small it is, can generate a lot of employment especially for the women and the youth in the country. This is very important in countries whose economy is not stable and cannot provide employment for most of its citizens. It is also important in situations where the women are not empowered and have no means of making money in order to take care of their families. By selling these crafts they are able to make a living and make a better life for themselves.
As a result of people getting gainful employment, the economy of that country will become better if only slightly. This is because there will be more tax for the government to collect and support the citizens. The entrepreneurial sector will also expand significantly meaning that there will be more job creation for the citizens in the country. There is also the fact that the crafts are usually exported helping the country earn a significant amount of foreign exchange. With this foreign exchange, the country is able to import other important goods for the benefit of the citizens in the country.
