India's textile tradition is an elegant legacy perfectly preserved over millennia. The extraordinary range of Indian handlooms reflects the cultural richness and adaptability. Stretched along the length and breath of the country, each region has its own characteristic fabric that weaves its history.
India produces a variety of Home Textiles. Indian Home Textiles crafts are as varied India's regions with their diverse culture and traditions. Unmatched in elegance and style, Indian Textiles are transformed into multitude products like bed spreads, cushion covers, bed linen, table linen, decorative table cloths, durries, duvets and quilts, patchwork quilts, and fabrics. Designs are either woven or printed on the cloth and vary from block printing, tie and dye, embroidery to other resist techniques. Some of the Indians techniques of textile crafts are Embroidery, Patchwork, Zari work, Hand block printing and Crotchet/Lacework.
Each region of India specializes in a particular kind of textile craft. In the southern part of India, Kondi furnishings are the exclusive fabrics from Irkal in Karnataka and the products range from tablecloths to napkins, curtains to place mats. While, cutwork designed fabric is part of an exclusive range being created in Paramakudi. Fine durries in brilliant colors made of cotton and silk are a specialty of Salem, Tamil Nadu.
In the eastern part of India, household industries in Nagaland produce exquisite handloom products. Santipur, West Bengals furnishings are made with exclusive weaving technique called Jamdani and are used as fabric for dresses and home furnishings. They are characterized by their gossamer texture.
In the north, bright mirror work cushions and bedspreads from Rajasthan and Gujrat in western India are unmatchable. Gharcholu is cotton fabric divided into squares with brocade work by the weavers of Jaipur, Rajasthan. The variety of technical possibilities leads to a surprising number of new items in countless variety of colors, designs and styles. Cotton Durries or runners from Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan are also very popular.
