In this German Scientist painting Hermann Julius Oberth (June 25, 1894 - December 28, 1989) was an Austro-Hungarian-born, German and Romanian physicist, and, along with the Russian Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and the American Robert Goddard, one of the founding fathers of rocketry and astronautics.

Oberth was born to a Saxon family in the Transylvanian city of Sighisoara. On July 6, 1918 he married Mathilde Hummel, with whom he had four children, among them a son who died at the front during World War II, and a daughter who also died during the war, when a liquid oxygen plant exploded in a workplace accident in August 1944. Oberth died in Nuremberg, on December 28, 1989.
