In this painting Christopher Columbus was a navigator and colonialist who is one of several historical figures credited as the first European to discover the Americas. Though not the first to reach the Americas from Europe, it was Columbus' voyages that led to general European awareness of the hemisphere and the successful establishment of European cultures in the New World. The name Christopher Columbus is the Anglicization of the Latin Christopher’s Columbus. Also well known are his name's rendering in modern Italian as Christopher Colombo and in Spanish as Cristobel Colon.

Columbus was born between August and October 1451 in Genoa, Italy. His father was Domenico Colombo, a middle-class wool weaver working between Genoa and Savona. His mother was Susanna Fontanarossa.He married Filipa Moniz, daughter of the Azores governor, Bartholomew Perestrello, that was Genoese. On May 20, 1506, Columbus died in Valladolid by heart attack caused by Reiter's Syndrome (also called reactive arthritis). According to his personal diaries and notes by contemporaries, the symptoms of this illness (burning pain during urination, pain and swelling of the knees, and conjunctivitis of the eyes) were clearly visible in his last three years.
