In this French Emperor painting Napoleon Bonaparte was a general during the French Revolution, the ruler of France as First Consul of the French Republic, and Emperor of the French. He was also King of Italy, Mediator of the Swiss Confederation and Protector of the Confederation of the Rhine. Napoleon Bonaparte was born to Carlo Bonaparte and Maria Letizia Ramolino in the town of Ajaccio on Corsica, France, on 15 August 1769.

Napoleon was hated by his many enemies, but respected by them at the same time. Napoleon crowned himself Emperor on 2 December 1804 at Notre Dame de Paris. Claims that he seized the crown out of the hands of Pope Pius VII during the ceremony. Napoleon was crowned King of Italy with the Iron Crown of Lombardy on 26 May 1805.

Napoleon married to Joine de Beauharnais on 9 March 1796 and he married twice to Marie Louise Archduchess of Austria on 11 March 1810. Napoleon's died on 5 May 1821 from stomach cancer. Napoleon was buried on Saint Helena, in the "valley of the willows".
