In this painting George Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (August 27, 1770 - November 14, 1831) was a German philosopher and, with Johann Gottlieb Fichte and Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schilling, one of the representatives of German idealism. On November 14 Hegel was dead he died from a gastrointestinal disease. In accordance with his wishes, Hegel was buried on November 16 in the Dorotheenstadt Cemetery next to Fichte and Solger.

Hegel was born on August 27, 1770 in Stuttgart, in the Duchy of Wberg in southwestern Germany. His father, Georg Ludwig, was (secretary to the revenue office) at the court of Karl Eugen, Duke of Wberg. Hegel's mother, Maria Magdalena Louisa. She died when Hegel was thirteen of a "bilious fever" (Gallenfieber) which Hegel and his father also caught but narrowly survived. Hegel married Marie Helena Susanna von Tucher (1791-1855), the eldest daughter of a Senator, in 1811.
