In this German Religious leader painting Martin Luther (November 10, 1483 - February 18, 1546) was a German monk, theologian, and church reformer. He is also considered to be the founder of Protestantism. Luther was born to Hans Luder and his wife Margaret on November 10, 1483 in Eisleben, Germany, then part of the Holy Roman Empire. He was baptized the next morning on the feast day of St. Martin of Tours. His family moved to Mansfield in 1484, where his father was a leaseholder of copper mines and smelters.

Hans Luther was ambitious for himself and his family, and was determined to see his eldest son become a lawyer. He sent Martin to Latin schools in Mansfield. He decided to leave his studies and become a monk. Luther dedicated himself to monastic life, devoting himself to fasts, long hours in prayer, pilgrimage, and frequent confession. On October 19, 1512, he was awarded his Doctor of Theology. On the evening of June 13, 1525, Luther married Katharina von Bora, one of a group of 12 nuns he had helped escape from the Nimbschen Cistercian convent in April 1523.
