The Leopards (Panthera pardus) is probably the most successful model of a predator. The coat and color of the leopard are distinctive. The ground color is varying shades of grayish or whitish buff, the underside of the body white, with a white patch on the otherwise black ear. The pattern of the coat consists of solid black spots on the head and upper neck, outer side of the limbs and belly. Cubs of the normal and black or melanistic form may occur in the litter.

In size, leopards are considerably smaller than the lion and the tiger. They have adapted to man's habits and, though they live on the domestic stock, remain invisible to the untrained and searching eye. Catholic in diet, they eat anything they can kill from crabs to cattle and can be a pest in the neighborhood of villages and towns, living on domestic stock and being particularly fond of taking dogs. Monkeys are another favorite food and are often killed as they panic and seek safety on the ground. For its size, the leopard is quite powerful and often carries it prey up a tree to store, probably to prevent other stronger predators from appropriating the kill. The pairs stay together up to and after the cubs are born.
