You can go to a specific sub-category of Kalamkari Painting using the navigation bar on the left.

Kalamkari is the old traditional painting on cloth from the south India. Mainly done in Andhra Pradesh, this painting has a typical and striking combination of wax resist and pen work. The cloth is initially block printed and later the wax resist is applied with the help of 'Kalam' (pen) and hence the name Kalamkari. Masulipatnam and Kalahasti are the two main areas where this art is practiced. The themes of these paintings are essentially Hindu mythology and Hindu Gods. The colours used are all natural dyes like the ochre, indigo, charcoal black and red. The figures are well defined with sharp features and elaborate ornamentation.

Like every other folk art, the art of Kalamkari is passed on to the son by the father. This is done mainly by the male members of the family. Radha-Krishna, Ganesha, Natraja and Vishnu are the chief themes that often adorn the canvas of Kalamkari artists. These days this art form is kept alive by a few families in the region. Still they have tried hard and kept each and every feature alive for the generations to come.
