Rajsthan, the land of hills and valleys, deserts and beautiful colours. Rajsthan, the land of joy and sorrow, cowardice and velour. Rajsthan the land lusted after by conquerors and loved by its countrymen. And we see it all in the work of unknown men in little workshops, who sought to tell in pictures of the life of their gods, of their rulers, of their legends and their poetry, of women and of love ... a visual legacy of times lost in the sands of time. And so we go back in time. We reach out to touch the sheer muslin of gauzy veils, we look at reflections in lotus-covered ponds, we travel the pathways with bygone kings, and we shadow them in their battles and partake of their banquets... We journey into a past painted in all the glorious colours of its history.

Rajsthan Art Paintings have stood the test of time over the past five centuries. Rich in style, color and form, they depict simple architectural backgrounds, wildlife in action, religious fervor and romance. Before the influence of Mughal painting on the Rajput style, there had already existed a style in Rajasthan; rich in form and outline derived from the Gujarat school of the Chaurapan Chasika (1500 A.D.) illustrations. The protruding eyes of the Jain style had disappeared but they were still characteristically long, stretching between the nose and ears. Flat heads in profile and beautifully colored clothes typical of the pre-Mughal & Rajput style were quite impressive. The whole of Rajasthan state was divided into numerous princely states. Each state patronized the art of miniature painting and evolved a characteristic style of its own. The major centers of miniature painting were Mewar, Bundi Kota, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Amber (Jaipur) and Kishangarh.
