Haraoti, the state of Hara Rajputs comprises the territories of the two states of Bundi and Kotah. The most powerful ruler of Bundi was Rao chhatter sal (1631-59). Shah Jahan made him the Governor of Delhi and later he played conspicuous part in the subjugation of the Deccan. Under his successor, Bhao Singh (1659 - 82), Bundi painting made rapid progress.
The female faces in this period have a close affinity with the paintings executed under Raj Singh of Mewar. Water birds, lotuses and plantains in these paintings remind us of the landscape of the country wide around Bundi. Their other characteristics are the stylized treatment of trees and frequent representation of pecocks and ducks. |
