The Jain Malas is the meditational technique of Mantra (repetition of sound) combined with the technique of Japa (rotation) is a wonderful way to still the mind and induce one pointed concentration and awareness of the mantra you are using. A mala is used to count the number of times you repeat the mantra – traditionally each Yogic mala has 108, 54 or 27 beads on it. The latter is called a “Sumirini” mala and is used for japa practiced during ones daily activities.
Malas can be made out of many different stones and crystals depending on what energy you are wanting to envoke into your mantra meditation. Sandalwood and crystal stones are commonly used as well as semi precious stones relating to the chakras or the planets.
It is recommended that you have a mala that is just for your “Sacred” Mantra – It is kept in a little bag and is only brought out at times when you are practicing your mantra meditation. As well as having a sacred mala it is common for people to have a mala that they wear during their day to day activities to remind them of their mantra, intention and life journey.
