Avadh And Hyderabad Paintings
On the Bank of the river Saryu, about eighty miles from Lucknow, is a sleepy little town engulfed by giant tamarind trees. Here the Saryu bends sharply to the west and empties in to a vast lake in which the setting sun is reflected in all its glory. Fyzabad, which was once the capital of the Kingdom of Oudh and which arose from the shambles of the Mughal Empire, is situated here. It was founded by Sa'adat Khan (1722-39), the first Nawab Wazir of Oudh. He provided the nucleus for a new city when he built hunting - lodge four miles west of Ayodhya, the sacred city of the Hindus Gardens were laid out and shops sprang up in the neighborhood.
