Alfred Tennyson was born on 6 August 1809 in Somersby, Lincolnshire, a rector's son and fourth of 12 children. He was one of the descendants of King Edward III of England. His father, Rev. George Clayton Tennyson and his mother, Elizabeth Fytche. Tennyson married Emily Sell wood, whom he had known since childhood, in the Village of Ship Lake. Tennyson died on 6 October 1892, aged 83. He was buried at Westminster Abbey.
